What is Kinesio Tape and Where did it come from?

Kinesio Taping is a rehabilitative, therapeutic modality based on the body's own natural healing processes; it exhibits its efficacy through the activation of the neurological and circulatory systems. Muscles not only contribute to the movements of the body, but also control the circulation of the venous, lymph flows and body temperature, etc. The main controller of every system in the body is the nervous system. Kinesio Tex Tape has been created to mimic the qualities of the skin. Kinesio Tape was developed over 30yrs ago by a Japanese Chiropractor by the name of Kenzo Kase. Dr Kase has used this form of stabilization following adjustments to help increase healing time by promoting support. Kinesio Tape helps to reinforce the pressure that has been taken off the spine following the adjustment allowing a decrease in inflammation and lessen irritation.

Kinesio Taping is Fundamentally different from conventional sports taping.

Conventional athletic tape is designed to constrict and immobilize the movement of the affected muscles and joints. For this purpose, several layers of tape must be rolled around and/or cover the afflicted area, applying significant pressure and resulting in the obstruction of the flow of bodily fluids an UNDESIRABLE side effect. This is also the reason athletic tape is generally applied immediately before the sports activity and removed immediately after the activity is finished. On the other hand, Kinesio Taping is based on a different philosophy that aims to give free range of motion in order to allow the body's muscular system to heal itself bio-mechanically. To ensure that the muscles have free range of motion, tape with an elasticity of 130-140% of its original length is recommended for Kinesio Taping. This specific elasticity also will not allow an over stretch of the muscles themselves. It may look like regular athletic tape, but Kinesio Tex Tape and Kinesio Taping are fundamentally different from athletic tape.

When is Kinesio Tape used?

Kinesio tape was first introduced to the USA public by our Olympic athletes; Kerri Walsh is one of the most famous and recent ones from the 2008 Games in Beijing. Kinesio Tape has now begun to catch on to all our athletic players famous names such as; Serena Williams, Lance Armstrong, David Beckham, Robby Ginepri and Hasheem -Thabeet just to name a few. To much of peoples' surprise Kinesio Tape is not only used for those who are participating in professional sports it is now being used to help stabilize and promote healing in injured or unstable areas. Kinesio Tape is used to help with all types of shoulder, knee, elbow, and wrist injuries. It is also used with acute and chronic low back, neck and pelvic conditions especially helpful with relieving pain in the pelvis of pregnant women.

How we implement Kinesio Tape in our office....

Since introducing Kinesio Tape to our office we have seen great improvements with decreasing treatment time by increasing joint stability after adjustments allowing patients to heal from injuries at a faster rate. When a nerve is irritated it expresses itself in dysfunction such as spasm, burning, sharp, and dull pain along with many other not so obvious symptoms. Relieving pressure off of that irritated nerve causes those symptoms to decrease therefore helping the body to heal. The tape allows patients to hold their adjustment longer by increasing the support around those irritated nerves. We at Yusavage Family Chiropractic strive to find the best possible way to increase our patient's health.
